A New Chapter

Blake is 8.5 months old now and doing great! We visited the elephant barn today for an event they had going on. It was nice and relaxed and we got to be there for just over an hour which meant we got to talk to the elephant department supervisor, Dinah a lot. It was fun, it was nice to be around the elephants again, we got to pet George a lot and the best news, I get to go back! We don't know when there will be an opening but Dinah said maybe the board will let her hire someone for the summer. I know how to make sure I get any position that opens up so for now life is just about enjoying my time with my son and getting healthy so that when I get the call there's a position open I won't have any regrets!

I can't wait to go work with the elephants again. If you could only look into their eyes and just sit and observe them for a bit, you'd probably understand my need to return. The smell of the barn, the sweetness with a little bit of must, it's not to be matched.

More soon, I'm sure. Just had to share!

(No recent update on Tiki... hopefully we'll hear soon!)

Just Like Mommy

Our boy needs his sleep, just like his mommy.

We moved, we're still unpacking but everything's to the new house from the old house and life can finally start getting back to normal. Normal meaning Blake nurses every 3.5-4 hours, and naps after being awake for 2 hours during the day. While we were moving and cleaning up the old house, that didn't happen. We had one grumpy, emotional, very overtired baby on our hands! After only a couple days spent mostly at home, though he's back to his happy go-lucky self and is easily going to sleep again!

I love my boy but sleep is a necessity!

He's so cute! He's 8 months old now and is quite mobile, although not in the traditional crawling fashion. If he's sitting he scoots on his butt and can turn in circles and if he lays down he just rolls all over the place. He'll roll, stop and look to see where his target is and then adjust to roll to it. It's hilarious and endearing to watch. He's such a comedian, I don't know if there's anything this boy loves more than making people laugh, besides laughing himself, and milk of course! He loves the dogs and laughs like crazy when they get the zoomies, and they love him. Even Teddy has gone up to him just to kiss his face.

The dogs are well. Kira's almost 9 and looks like her left eye has a cataract, so I wouldn't be surprised if she's mostly blind before too long but she's still happy and playful and entertaining. Eclipse is his goofy self and Teddy... well, Teddy is Teddy; neurotic and bossy and anal, but a big love and sweet as pie. Our new house (we are buying it so we won't be moving again any time soon!) is in an area that has a lot of walking options so once we get settled in a bit more and Blake is fully back on his schedule expect more posts of canine adventures and pictures. For now, enjoy these few pictures but keep in mind I didn't get to vacuum for 3 days because our vacuum was at the old house and we only have one car now that Alex had at work during the day!

We're Still Here

We're still here, still alive, still happy, but a lot is changing.

Blake is 7 months old now and so happy, so silly, so expressive and so talkative. He's passionate and determined and hilarious. He's the joy of our lives and we feel like we have this parenting thing "down" (*rolls eyes* no one ever has parenting down, it's forever throwing something new your way)! He's been on reflux medicine since he was two months old, it has an absolutely disgusting flavor. Last month he figured out how to spit it all out when we'd give it to him (twice a day on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before his next feed...) so we started mixing it with the lowest sugar content juice we could find which worked for all of 5 weeks. Now he refuses to take it at all, he keeps his mouth firmly closed and if you can get it between his lips he keeps his teeth closed or his tongue up so it sprays everywhere but his mouth. So for the third time in 3 months we're trying to see if he can go without it... We're almost to the fourth missed dose and we're okay so far but we'll have to see. I'm really hoping he does ok because this weekend Alex is camping/hunting, next Saturday we have to be out of town all day and the following weekend we're supposed to be moving!

That's right, we're supposed to be closing on a house in 13 days! (10/26/2012) We have a lot of packing left to do and only one full day in which to accomplish it.

The dogs are well, Kira's almost 9! She's still sweet and goofy and relaxed. Teddy is 8.5 and spends most of his day in the most comfortable/darkest place he can find but is still my first baby. Eclipse, he's still such a spazzy, goofy golden boy! He's almost 4 years old and I've just recently started working with him everyday again. Hopefully daily training will help his house behavior, I'm kicking myself for getting so out of touch with my poor dogs!

The dogs love Blake, well Teddy will learn to, and we couldn't be happier with where our family is right now. That's a lie, Alex could have a different job, he hasn't gotten all of his hours since Blake was born but all else is well.

Tiki girl is still in training, I've heard she's doing well but that's the extent of it.

I think I'll try posting more. I know this isn't really a parenting blog but that's where I'm at in life right now so I'll use it :-)

P.S. for those wondering, yes, I already have puppy fever!

Updates!

Tiki handled the flights (she was on three different flights, a total of 5ish hours in the air but 9 hours traveling!) great, she seemed a bit stressed and exhausted when she arrived but no major issues. I cried when she left with the volunteer that flew with her, she didn't want to leave but I'm happy she made it ok.

She's been in the prison for a month yesterday and is doing well. I was told yesterday that I should be proud of her so I'm excited to see where she ends up! I do wish I'd had more faith in her, but not being able to see her potential just proves to me that I need to be done raising for the foreseeable future.

Onto the little man! Blake got bronchitis the Monday after Tiki left, it was horrible and scary but he's all better now. He had bronichitis, a double ear infection and sinus infection. Poor little man was miserable. He now weighs 14.4 lbs at 3.5 months old which puts him in the 55th percentile. He's such a fun little guy, he talks and coos constantly and graces us with huge smiles first thing in the morning and all day after that. It's hard to have a bad day with such a happy baby around!

These pictures are from my phone but I have a ton on my camera I need to upload and edit :-D
The dogs obviously love him. Anytime I put his floor time rug on the floor Eclipse just waits to lay down next to Blake. Blake loves his floor time, he prefers his back but often when he fusses he just wants to be put on his back to look around
Hard to believe just a little over 3 months ago he was little man. Babies are such miracles and motherhood is spectacular, although absolutely nothing like raising a puppy at this point!

The End Of An Era

This little big lady is leaving us tomorrow.
We're going to miss her terribly but if I'm being honest it's a relief, too. She's a great dog but the dynamic between Eclipse and her is difficult to live with, they just love each other too much. I will keep everyone updated on the progress she makes in formal training.

Tiki leaving is the end of an era in that she's the last puppy we'll raise. My heart isn't in it. After eight years and four puppies, I'm not devoted anymore. Maybe someday that will change, only time will tell, but for the foreseeable future Tiki is our last SDIT.

Updates on this little cutie will be forthcoming.

She's Still Here

The Teekster is still here. We expected her to be gone more than a month ago but that's okay, she'll leave for formal training when she leaves :-D

In the meantime, I'd like to introduce you to:
This is Blake Daniel. He was born at 8:28 p.m. on March 7th weighing 7 lbs 1 oz, 19.5 inches long with his hand by his head as in the picture. It was a scary, physically (and emotionally) traumatizing delivery but he's healthy and perfect and that's what matters. He was delivered completely pain-med free after less than 6 hours of what the hospital considered active labor and we couldn't be happier with the little guy! The dogs, they adore him although he of course doesn't pay any attention to them just yet ;-)

I'll try to update more, but we'll see how that goes. Our little guy likes his sleep, but he also likes to eat meaning I haven't gotten more than 2.5 hours of consecutive sleep in 3 weeks. That wears on me but he's so worth it!

Love to you all,
from our family of three!

One More Month

Tiki will be leaving in a month-month and a half, which just so happens to perfectly align with when we expect this baby to make his/her arrival!

We love the big girl, and can't wait to see what she decides to do with the rest of her life. If she gets career changed she won't be coming home, that much we know for sure. If she didn't have a few annoying habits she'd fit in well, but we're kind of looking forward to Eclipse acting mature again without anothing big dog to play with! ;-)

I've been slacking, we haven't done much, honestly. Preparing for a baby takes a lot of energy and time which means fun/interesting outings don't get much attention!

We did do one fun thing in August that I never posted about, we took Tiki to the parade of classic cars. One of the biggest events in our little town she had some fear issues but overall she did great!
